Rotator cuff tears

The rotator cuff is a group of four tendons that connect muscles around the shoulder blade to the upper arm. These tendons help lift and rotate the arm and keep the shoulder joint centred.

A tear may occur suddenly after a fall or lifting injury, or develop gradually as the tendon becomes worn. Common symptoms include pain at night, pain when reaching overhead, weakness and difficulty lifting the arm.

Not every tear needs surgery. Treatment may begin with activity changes, pain relief, physiotherapy and sometimes an injection. Repair may be considered for a traumatic tear, significant weakness or persistent symptoms that have not improved with appropriate non-operative care.
