SLAP injuries
A SLAP injury is a tear in the upper part of the labrum, the rim of cartilage around the shoulder socket. The biceps tendon attaches in this area. A tear may follow a fall onto the arm, sudden pulling injury or repetitive overhead sport.
Symptoms can include deep shoulder pain, clicking, catching and pain with throwing, lifting or overhead work. SLAP changes are also common on scans as people age and do not always cause symptoms.
Treatment usually begins with physiotherapy to restore shoulder movement, strength and control. When a clearly symptomatic tear continues to limit activity, surgery may involve repairing the labrum or treating the biceps attachment, depending on age, tissue quality and activity goals.
