SLAP repair

Focused information to help you understand this topic and the next steps.

SLAP repair

SLAP repair is keyhole surgery that reattaches the torn upper labrum to the rim of the shoulder socket using small anchors and sutures. It is most often considered in younger or highly active patients with a traumatic tear that remains symptomatic after rehabilitation.

The repair must be protected while it heals. Early movement is controlled, lifting and resisted biceps exercise are restricted, and return to overhead sport follows a progressive programme.

For some patients, particularly when the biceps-labral tissue is worn rather than acutely torn, a biceps procedure may provide a more reliable result than SLAP repair. Angus will explain which option best fits the individual circumstances.
