Subacromial decompression

Subacromial decompression is keyhole surgery performed in the space above the rotator cuff. Inflamed bursal tissue is removed and, when necessary, a small amount of bone or rough tissue is smoothed to create a comfortable environment for the tendons.

It is not required for most patients with impingement-type pain. Angus considers it only when symptoms have persisted despite appropriate physiotherapy and other non-operative treatment, and when the examination and imaging suggest surgery may help.

• Usually performed as day surgery
• Early shoulder movement is generally encouraged
• A sling is commonly used for comfort only
• Recovery is guided by pain, movement and strength
