Knee Rehabilitation

General principles

Focused information to help you understand this topic and the next steps.

General principles

Protect the repair

In the early weeks, healing tissue is vulnerable. Follow instructions about crutches, weight-bearing, braces and movement limits even if the knee feels comfortable.

Control swelling

Swelling is expected, but too much fluid inside the joint makes it harder to activate the quadriceps. Elevation, ice, appropriate rest and careful activity progression help both comfort and muscle recovery.

Rebuild quadriceps strength

The quadriceps weakens quickly after injury and surgery. Restoring strength is one of the most important parts of rehabilitation and should be measured before returning to impact or sport.

Restore movement

Regaining full knee straightening and appropriate bending requires regular exercises. Your physiotherapist will tailor these to the healing stage and procedure.

Retrain balance and control

Strength alone is not enough. Balance, coordination and automatic control of the knee must be retrained before returning to running, landing and changes of direction.

Progress by milestones

Rehabilitation moves from protected movement to strengthening, functional training and then sport-specific work. Progress should depend on achieving strength, movement and control targets rather than time alone.
