Non-operative rehabilitation
Many knee problems improve without surgery, including patellofemoral pain, tendon problems, partial ligament injuries, degenerative meniscus tears, mild instability and early osteoarthritis. Non-operative care is active treatment—not simply rest.
What it involves
- Progressive quadriceps, hamstring and hip strengthening
- Movement and balance retraining
- Temporary modification of aggravating activities
- Low-impact fitness such as cycling or swimming
- Careful progression of tendon and sport-specific loading
- Occasional injection treatment when pain or inflammation prevents rehabilitation
Many people notice meaningful improvement over 6–12 weeks. Tendon conditions often need 3–6 months, while osteoarthritis is managed through an ongoing programme aimed at maintaining strength, function and quality of life.
