Eating and drinking

A safe anaesthetic requires an empty stomach. Follow the fasting instructions in your hospital information exactly.

Patients are commonly asked not to eat for at least six hours before surgery, while small amounts of clear water may sometimes be allowed until two hours beforehand. Your own written instructions take priority—if you are uncertain, contact the hospital or practice before the day.
