Your anaesthetic
The anaesthetist will discuss the most suitable approach. Depending on the operation and your health, this may involve general anaesthesia, spinal anaesthesia, sedation or a regional nerve block.
An intravenous line will be placed for medication. In theatre you will be helped onto the operating table, kept warm and monitored continuously. For some shoulder and lower-limb operations, a nerve block may be recommended to improve pain relief after surgery.
