Hip osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis occurs when the smooth cartilage covering the hip joint gradually wears down. The joint may become stiff, painful and less able to move freely.

Pain is often felt in the groin, front of the thigh or buttock. Walking, putting on shoes, getting into a car and sleeping may become difficult. Early treatment can include exercise, weight management, pain relief and activity changes. Hip replacement may be considered when symptoms significantly limit daily life despite appropriate non-surgical care.
