Trochanteric bursitis

A bursa is a small cushioning sac. The trochanteric bursa sits over the bony point on the outside of the hip and can become irritated, causing tenderness and pain when walking, climbing stairs or lying on that side.

This is often part of a broader condition involving the gluteal tendons rather than inflammation of the bursa alone. Treatment usually includes activity changes, specific strengthening, anti-inflammatory measures and sometimes an injection. Surgery is rarely required.
