Total hip replacement — anterior approach

Total hip replacement removes the damaged ball and socket surfaces and replaces them with an artificial joint. The anterior approach uses an incision at the front of the hip and works between the major muscles rather than cutting through them.

Angus uses this approach for most primary hip replacements. It may provide improved comfort and mobility early in recovery and a lower risk of dislocation. A different approach may be safer or more suitable for some patients.

Who may benefit

• Severe hip pain limiting walking, sleep or daily activities
• Stiffness and reduced movement
• Osteoarthritis, avascular necrosis or selected hip fractures
• Symptoms that have not improved with non-surgical treatment
