ACL tears

The anterior cruciate ligament, or ACL, is one of the main ligaments that keeps the knee stable. It is commonly torn during sports involving sudden turns, landing or contact, including rugby, netball, football, basketball and skiing.

People often describe a pop, immediate pain, rapid swelling and a sense that the knee gives way when turning. Injuries caused by an accident may qualify for ACC support. Some people regain good function with rehabilitation; active patients who want to return to pivoting sport or remain unstable may benefit from ACL reconstruction. Return to competitive sport is usually considered after 9–12 months of structured rehabilitation.
