MCL and LCL tears
The medial collateral ligament (MCL) supports the inner side of the knee and the lateral collateral ligament (LCL) supports the outer side. MCL injuries are common after a blow to the outside of the knee. LCL injuries are less common and may occur when force pushes the knee outwards.
Most isolated MCL injuries heal with bracing and rehabilitation. LCL injuries and combined injuries involving the posterolateral corner are more complex and may need surgical repair or reconstruction. ACC support may apply when the injury resulted from an accident.
