Articular cartilage injury

Articular cartilage is the smooth surface covering the ends of the bones inside the knee. Injury can range from mild surface damage to a full-thickness defect exposing bone. It may occur after trauma or alongside another injury such as an ACL tear.

Cartilage has a limited ability to heal because it has little blood supply. Treatment depends on the size and location of the defect, symptoms, age and activity goals. Options range from rehabilitation and activity modification to procedures that stimulate or restore a cartilage surface. ACC may apply after an acute accident.
