When can I fly or travel long distances?

Long periods sitting after surgery increase the risk of a blood clot in the leg or lung. International flights and long car journeys carry more risk than short domestic travel. The risk also varies with the operation, your health, previous clots and some medications.

Discuss planned travel with Angus before surgery or before booking. When travel is considered safe:

• Drink water regularly and limit alcohol
• Move your ankles and legs frequently while seated
• Stand and walk at least hourly when possible
• Avoid crossing your legs or wearing restrictive clothing
• Use compression stockings if specifically recommended
• Take prescribed blood-thinning medication exactly as directed

Seek individual medical advice if you have had a previous clot, have a family history of clotting or have another risk factor.
