Hip Rehabilitation
Pain, swelling and rest
Simple ways to manage expected discomfort and recognise when activity should be reduced.
Pain, swelling and rest
Take pain relief as prescribed so you can move, sleep and exercise comfortably. Requirements usually reduce as recovery progresses. Ask the clinical team before changing medication if you are uncertain.
Swelling and bruising can affect much of the operated leg and may persist for several months. During the first two to three weeks, balance activity with regular rest:
- Use ice packs regularly to help manage pain and swelling
- Elevate the leg when resting
- Rest for approximately an hour in the morning and afternoon
Some discomfort, bruising and swelling are expected. Increased pain, swelling or limping after activity usually means you have done too much. Reduce the activity temporarily and return to a more comfortable level.
