After rotator cuff repair
The repaired tendon needs several weeks to begin healing to bone. A sling is commonly required for 4–6 weeks, although the exact period depends on the tear and repair.
Early exercises are passive or assisted, meaning the arm is moved without the repaired muscles working strongly. Active lifting and strengthening are introduced later under guidance. Heavy lifting and sudden movements must be avoided until healing and strength are adequate.
What to expect
- First 4–6 weeks: protect the repair in a sling and complete approved gentle exercises
- Following phase: progressively restore active movement
- Later months: rebuild rotator cuff and shoulder blade strength
- Return to heavy work or sport: based on healing, strength and functional testing
Meaningful recovery takes several months, and improvement in strength and comfort can continue for up to a year.
