Shoulder Rehabilitation

After subacromial decompression

Focused information to help you understand this topic and the next steps.

After subacromial decompression

There is no tendon or labral repair to protect, so movement can usually begin early. The sling is generally used for comfort and gradually discarded as pain settles.

Physiotherapy focuses on restoring comfortable range of motion, shoulder blade control and progressive rotator cuff strength. Desk work may be possible relatively early, while heavier or repetitive overhead work takes longer.

Typical progression

  • Early phase: pain control and gentle movement
  • Following weeks: regain full movement and begin strengthening
  • Later phase: work, gym and sport-specific loading as strength returns
