Shoulder Rehabilitation

General principles

Focused information to help you understand this topic and the next steps.

General principles

Successful shoulder rehabilitation balances protection with progressive movement. Pain often improves before repaired tendon or labrum is strong, so feeling comfortable does not mean the repair is ready for unrestricted activity.

  • Use the sling for the period instructed
  • Keep the hand, wrist and elbow moving unless told otherwise
  • Complete only the exercises approved for the current stage
  • Manage pain so sleep and gentle exercise are possible
  • Do not lift, push, pull or support body weight through the arm until cleared
  • Attend physiotherapy and progress according to movement and strength milestones
