ACL reconstruction
A torn ACL does not reliably heal back to normal. Reconstruction replaces it with a tendon graft, usually taken from the patient’s hamstring or patellar tendon. The graft is secured in small bone tunnels and gradually becomes incorporated as a functioning ligament.
Surgery may be recommended for people wanting to return to pivoting or contact sport, or when instability affects everyday activity. Graft choice and technique are selected for the individual. Rehabilitation is staged, with return to competitive sport commonly taking 9–12 months. ACC cover often applies after an accidental injury.
