High tibial or distal femoral osteotomy

High tibial osteotomy (HTO) and distal femoral osteotomy (DFO) correct leg alignment to shift body weight away from a damaged part of the knee. The bone is cut precisely, repositioned and held with a plate and screws while it heals.

These joint-preserving operations may suit younger, active patients with arthritis limited to one side of the knee when joint replacement is not yet appropriate.
