Unicompartmental knee replacement

A unicompartmental knee replacement, often called a partial knee replacement, resurfaces only the damaged inner or outer compartment of the knee. The healthy compartments and both cruciate ligaments are preserved.

It may suit patients whose arthritis is genuinely confined to one compartment, with correctable alignment, good ligament function and no significant disease elsewhere in the knee. Potential benefits include a smaller operation, more natural knee movement and faster early recovery than total knee replacement.

Robotic assistance can help map the knee, plan implant position and balance the joint accurately. Partial replacement is not suitable for everyone; Angus will recommend it only when the examination and imaging meet the required criteria.
